In 2018, Gayla Downey discovered yoga and Women for Sobriety (WFS), a program for women in recovery from substance use disorders, at the beginning of her recovery journey. At first it was just 5 minutes on the mat to connect breath with movement to help with depression and anxiety.
In 2020, she became a Certified Facilitator for Women for Sobriety and she wondered if “yoga for women in recovery” was something she could share with other women on the path seeking recovery and healing. A close friend through WFS pointed her to Taryn Strong, Founder of SheRecovers® and SheRecovers® Trauma Informed Yoga.
Gayla has continued her studies of yogic principles with South River Yoga over the past year. "Yoga is so much more than physical practice and I love the way that the South River Yoga Community embodies the yogic philosophy."
Today Gayla is a RYT-200, SheRecovers® Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher. This year she plans to complete Yoga For All Certification and begin 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training at South River Yoga.
